You are a Role Model - Even if you don't realize it

Who, me? A role model?” you might say. “That’s not even possible!” Yes, you. It’s possible that you believe that you’re just coasting along, doing your own thing, and not really being a powerhouse or a do-gooder and all that other stuff. Oh, and did you guess what? It’s possible that you’re making a positive impact on the life of another person without even being aware of it. It’s possible that you inspire others without even realizing it! How are you able to be so certain?   I will share some signs that your actions and presence make a real impact in the world.

You're a great active listener!

Thank you for your kind compliment! Active listening is a crucial skill that involves fully engaging with and understanding the  message. It goes beyond just hearing words. It requires giving undivided attention, showing genuine interest, and demonstrating empathy. Active listening involves techniques such as maintaining eye contact, nodding to indicate understanding, paraphrasing or summarizing what the speaker said, and asking clarifying questions. By practicing active listening, we create a safe and supportive space for the speaker to express themselves, and a better understanding and connection. Additionally, active listening helps us gather accurate information, avoid misunderstandings, and build stronger relationships. It is an essential skill in both personal and professional settings, enabling effective communication and collaboration. Listening is, in my opinion, one of the skills that has always been grossly undervalued. We place a high premium on talkativeness, wittiness, and the capacity to speak intelligently on a variety of subjects. Regarding maintaining silence and focusing one’s attention on the speaker, not so much. But there’s more to it than just keeping quiet when other people are speaking. If you really know how to listen to someone, you are giving them room to breathe and allowing them to claim their place as human beings. You never know how much of a difference it can be to someone who is in desperate need of it when you lend them an ear to listen.

People are looking to you for guidance!

If you have the ability to listen well, I’m willing to bet that you are also an excellent counselor. Therefore, you most likely play the role of the  person that others turn to when they require some sound advice. This has become apparent in my own life, and at first, it took me completely by surprise. To tell you the truth, I don’t really feel like I have much to offer in the way of advice; I’m still trying to figure out life myself! But then I had the epiphany that my friends wouldn’t come to me if they didn’t trust that I could make good decisions for them. Or at the very least, consider me a potential source of a fresh viewpoint. What’s more, do you know what? That alone is sufficient on some occasions. In point of fact, even if they choose not to follow the guidance  you provide, the simple fact that you are presenting an alternative viewpoint demonstrates that you are being an example of open-mindedness.

You demonstrate to other people what it is like to have empathy for another person

The previous two points are intimately connected to this one. The ability to empathize with another person can be demonstrated by listening to them and offering them advice. You could reply with “That?” Idiot, that’s so easy even a child could do it! Hold your horses! In reality, empathy is quite a nebulous quality, and it is not something that everyone possesses. Believe me when I say that the people in your life will appreciate the time and effort you put into comprehending the circumstances in which they find themselves. Not only that, but the attention you give to one person will be amplified to the other people around you. Why? Because kindness begets kindness. Then people have the sense that they are understood and cared for, they naturally extend the same expansiveness to the people around them. It’s the result of the ripple effect at work! This skill of yours is pretty unique, and because of that, people look up to you even though you don’t consider yourself to be a leader or an example.

You have a strong internal drive

Let’s talk about what motivates us for a while, shall we? Our actions are guided by our various sources of motivation. Motivation may come from outside sources for some of us, such as rewards, promotions, pay raises, and other similar opportunities. For some people, there is an innate drive to succeed, to venture out into the world, and to simply continue gaining knowledge and maturing. The second variety is the one that motivates those who are in your immediate vicinity. Because they witness you persevering in spite of less than ideal conditions, and they want to emulate your tenacity. I came to the conclusion that the fact that I was able to motivate myself was one of the reasons why my children were able to complete their homework without grumbling and read books for pleasure. I don’t mean to boast, all I’m doing is pointing out how we might not be aware that the way we challenge ourselves to improve can serve as kindling for the passions of other people. A contagious work ethic isn’t the only thing that can spread positivity; as the following section demonstrates, our attitudes can as well.

You maintain a powerhouse of positive attitude!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Maintaining a positive attitude can truly be a powerhouse that fuels personal growth, resilience, and success. A positive attitude allows us to approach life’s challenges with optimism and determination, enabling us to find opportunities in difficult situations. It uplifts our mental and emotional well-being, promoting greater happiness, resilience, and a sense of fulfillment. With a positive mindset, we cultivate stronger relationships, allowing for a supportive and uplifting environment for ourselves and those around us. In a professional settings, a positive attitude enhances productivity, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, leading to greater success and advancement. It also plays a vital role in leadership, inspiring and motivating others to reach their full potential. Moreover, a positive attitude promotes physical health and overall well-being, as it reduces stress, boosts the immune system, and improves overall quality of life. Embracing positivity as a way of life creates a ripple effect, making the world a brighter and more hopeful place. A family member really amazed me with her enthusiasm. This is me, just of out of school, I started working for a family member of mine. She was the total opposite  of myself in every way. One day I bought her fruit basket out of appreciation and she shrieked with delight as if it were the first time she had ever received a fruit basket. When she came across somebody who was sporting a nice pair of shoes, she remarked out loud, “Those shoes are fab! Who made them and  where did you get them?

And regardless of the circumstances surrounding her life at the time (she was going through a separation/divorce), she maintained an upbeat and positive attitude at all times. She always said, “I can’t let anyone take away my joy” was one of her favorite things to say. Strangely, without even realizing it, I was letting go of my pretended coolness and opening up more and more as time went on. That is the power that comes from being positive. Truly. And if you are a positive person yourself, believe me when I say that somewhere in  this world there is a person who is encouraged and inspired by your smile and your cheerful, hopeful attitude.

You have appreciation for other people and show them!

You see, most of the time, we don’t think that expressing gratitude in the form of saying “thank you” or “I appreciate you” is particularly noteworthy or significant. In the end, it’s simply a matter of having good manners. But in reality, it is much more than that. Appreciation for other people is a powerful way to acknowledge and show them the value they bring added value o our lives. Taking the time to express genuine appreciation can have a profound impact on individuals, allowing positive relationships and building a supportive community. When we appreciate others, we recognize their unique qualities, talents, and contributions. It is an opportunity to uplift and encourage them, boosting their confidence and sense of self-worth. Showing appreciation can take many forms, such as offering a kind word, expressing gratitude for their actions, or actively listening and empathizing with their experiences. Appreciating others, we create an atmosphere of respect, kindness, and connection. It doe’s not only strengthens our relationships but also inspires others to spread appreciation, creating a ripple effect of positivity and gratitude in our interactions and communities. The act of expressing gratitude is the equivalent of saying “I see you.” Those who are the recipients of these tokens of appreciation are imprinted in some way by them. They experience joy and a sense of value as a result of it. And as I mentioned earlier, kindness begets kindness. Therefore, you can be certain that appreciation  you feel extends far beyond the boundaries of the person you’ve helped.

The importance of you having strong values!

The importance of you, as an individual, having strong moral values cannot be overstated. Strong moral values serve as the moral compass that guides your thoughts, actions, and decisions in life. They define who you are as a person and shape the way you interact with others and the world around you. Having strong moral values provides you with a sense of purpose, integrity, and authenticity. It helps you make choices that align with your beliefs and principles, bringing a sense of self-respect and inner harmony. Strong moral values act as a guiding light during challenging times, enabling you to navigate difficult situations with clarity and resilience. They also contribute to building meaningful relationships, as shared values often form the foundation of deep connections and mutual understanding. Ultimately, having strong moral values empowers you to live a life that is true to yourself, makes a positive impact on others, and contributes to a better society. Even if you don’t recognize it, being someone who has strong moral values is another indication that you serve as a positive example for others. Integrity, honesty, and fairness are not just empty platitudes that you can read on a plaque. They are important to you in a meaningful way, as evidenced by the choices you make on a daily basis. And who knows, if you’re the same way, maybe you’re also showing the people around you how to live their lives in a positive way!

You have a healthy relationship with anxiety and stress!

How do you handle the stress that you face? Do you maintain your composure and get down to business in order to find a solution to a difficult problem?

When you feel like you need to, do you step back and give yourself a moment to catch your breath? A good stress management strategy makes you a role model, so make sure you practice what you preach. People are watching you clear each obstacle one at a time and are amazed at how you keep your composure under the intense amount of pressure. But if you find this to be difficult, there is no need to worry about that. By utilizing the following guidelines, you will be able to better manage your stress:

o Practice self-care.

Get regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and the recommended amount of sleep.

o Make meditation and breathing exercises a regular part of your routine.

o Figure out a method of handling one’s time effectively.

o If you find yourself in need of assistance, don’t be afraid to ask for it.

o Do not forget to give yourself permission to rest and relax through the pursuit of activities that feed your soul.

o Laugh.

You have an insatiable appetite for new information!

I don’t know about you, but anyone who has a thirst for knowledge is a source of motivation for me. And that’s fantastic! Having an insatiable appetite for new information is a wonderful quality to possess. It shows a thirst for knowledge, a curiosity about the world, and a desire for personal growth. With this mindset, you are constantly seeking out opportunities to learn, explore, and expand your horizons. You understand the value of staying informed, staying ahead, and embracing the ever-changing landscape of information and ideas. Your insatiable appetite for new information fuels your intellectual curiosity, helps you make informed decisions, and enables you to engage in meaningful conversations with others. It opens doors to new perspectives, widens your understanding of the world, and empowers you to adapt and thrive in an increasingly dynamic and interconnected society. Embrace this hunger for knowledge, keep seeking new information, and continue to quench your thirst for learning. The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and your insatiable appetite for new information will guide you on an exciting journey of lifelong learning.  If you are always looking for new ways to improve yourself, it reveals that you are someone who is enthusiastic, inquisitive, and open minded. And that always serves to motivate and fascinate me! It sends the message to those around you that you do not believe we simply have to remain in our current location and that it is possible for us to acquire new skills and accomplish things that we would never have imagined we were capable of. Observing how you challenge yourself and step outside of your comfort zone might be enough to inspire someone else to do the same.

Embracing diversity, you have a broad perspective

Embracing diversity, you have a broad perspective!

Finally, we will discuss inclusivity, a quality that, whenever I observe another individual demonstrating it, unquestionably inspires me to  perform to a higher standard on my own. Thank you for recognizing the broad perspective that comes with embracing diversity. Embracing diversity means appreciating and valuing the differences in people’s backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and perspectives. By recognizing and embracing diversity, I strive to ensure that my responses and interactions are inclusive and respectful to all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or any other characteristic. This broad perspective allows me to understand and acknowledge the richness and complexity of human experiences, allowing a more inclusive and empathetic environment. It enables me to approach topics with an open mind, consider various viewpoints, and provide well-rounded and informed insights. Embracing diversity, I aim to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society, where everyone’s voices and perspectives are valued and celebrated. Respect is the cornerstone of inclusive behavior. It indicates that you recognize the value of having a variety of perspectives and the power  that stems from doing so.   You feel that they bring so much joy and fulfillment into your life, and as a result, you truly appreciate and celebrate them.

How does this make you someone who others can look up to?

How does this make you someone who others can look up to?

Simply put, when you are inclusive of others, you are modeling behaviors such as respect and open mindedness for those around you. You are introducing them to new ways of thinking and being, which is a wonderful thing!

At work, for instance, you might be the person in charge of making sure that every member of the team gets a chance to share their thoughts and ideas. You actively challenge biases and stereotypes, not to make things more chaotic, but rather to guide people away from their preconceived notions and ideas. Or, you might be the person in your friend group who brings together people who normally wouldn’t socialize with one another. This could be a very rewarding role to play. It’s possible that performing these basic actions comes so naturally to you that you don’t see anything remarkable about them. However, for some individuals, those actions contribute to a shift in how they think about the wider world.

Concluding thoughts

Being a good example does not mean that you have to be perfect or know all the answers. Being genuine and approaching each day with the appropriate frame of mind, set of values, and goals in mind is essential  for success. It’s possible that you’re not aware of how much power you generate over other people. The importance of qualities such as active listening, a positive attitude, a broad perspective, and strong values cannot be understated. These attributes contribute to personal growth, effective communication, and meaningful connections with others.  Actively listening, maintaining a positive attitude, embracing diversity, and adhering to strong values, we can bring to our environment of understanding, empathy, and respect. Through continuous learning, self-reflection, and genuine appreciation for others, we  create positive impacts in our lives and the lives of those around us. So, let us strive to embody these qualities and embrace the power they hold, making a difference in our communities and contributing to a more inclusive, compassionate, and harmonious world. It’s possible that the thoughtful things you do out there are going to create a ripple effect all of their own. You should congratulate yourself and give yourself a high five if you find that you exhibit any of the characteristics that are described. You might believe that you’ve been coasting along without much effort all this time, but it turns out that you’re actually making a difference!
