Should I wash salted, dried fish before frying?
Yes, it’s advisable to wash salted, dried fish before frying to remove excess salt and any impurities. Soaking the dried fish in water for a period of time can help reduce its saltiness and rehydrate it. Here’s a general guide on how to wash salted, dried fish before frying:
- Soaking: Cut salted dried fish into small cubes. Place the salted, dried fish in a bowl or basin and cover it with water. Allow it to soak for at least 1 hour, depending on the thickness of the fish and the level of saltiness you prefer.
- Change Water: During the soaking period, change the water at least once or twice. This helps to remove the excess salt more effectively.
- Test saltiness: After soaking, taste a small piece to check if the saltiness has reached your desired level. If it’s still too salty, you can continue soaking for a bit longer.
- Rinse: Once the fish has reached the desired level of saltiness, thoroughly rinse it under running water. This helps to remove any remaining salt and impurities.
- Place dried fish in a colander to remove excess water.
By washing and soaking the salted dried fish, you not only control the saltiness but also improve the overall texture and flavor of the dish when it’s cooked.
