From Garden to Table.
While laying the table, I wondered if there is such a thing as eating too much drumstick that may compromise health. The elders certainly do not think so. They ate all the edible parts of the drumstick plant when it was in season and ate plenty of it.
This is still one of those trees that can be spotted growing freely and requires little care.Which is probably why we don’t pay as much heed to this miracle tree as we should. What else could be the reason for a profusion of moringa products flooding our supermarket shelves?
My grandma used to cook these flowers with eggs. My siblings and I used to absolutely enjoy this delicacy in a sandwich or with freshly cooked rice. Back when we were in primary school, my grandma cleaned and prepared this delicious dish.
So now, this miracle tree, which is growing so luscious, has flowers. Seeing that we weren’t looking to pluck the flowers off our own tree anytime soon, this seemed like the best option. I asked my helper to cut some for me.
As I got to work, cleaning and sorting the buds and flowers, I was rather keen that I try out a recipe that was a favorite from my grandma’s home.
I had no prior experience in any of the aforementioned tasks, ranging from cleaning to cooking these flowers. I just wanted to give it a go, and I was excited to do so. It was such a breeze to make, and it paired beautifully with the rice. I made myself a sandwich with memories of my beautiful grandma.
I tried and taste-tested this dish, and it was supa supa delish!

Flowers of Moringa being prepared
Prep Tip!
Soak flowers in water and remove them from the water. Repeat this process a couple of times until the water is crystal clear. Now place the flowers in a colander and leave them aside. Crack up eggs and leave in a bowl. This dish is done very quickly. Prepare before you start to cook.
Presentation and plating.
It was not complicated at all. A simple tempering of chopped onions and tomatoes. Adding the cleaned moringa flowers, sauté’ for a few minutes until soft, and add beaten eggs just at the end. Allow the eggs to scramble and take it off the flame. Apparently, this recipe is a traditional way of cooking moringa flowers in South India.
The finished dish was delicious in many ways. The moringa flowers take on a kind of chewy texture when cooked, similar to that of the oyster mushroom. The protein from the egg is necessary to add balance to a dish that is otherwise rich in minerals and vitamins.
Serve the dish with complementary sides, such as steamed rice, crusty bread, or roti. These accompaniments enhance the overall dining experience and provide balance to the flavors.
