How do you make baguettes from scratch?

Making baguettes doesn’t have to be intimidating, and this method proves just that. It’s my favorite go-to technique because it’s simple, approachable, and produces consistent results. Here’s how to master homemade baguettes step by step:

Let’s roll up our sleeves and bring the taste of baguettes to your kitchen!

Ingredients:                            Please measure ingredients accordingly.

2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. fine sale
1 tbsp. yeast
1 cup room temperature water
Method:
Combine the above ingredients, using the water. Once the dough comes together, place it in a deep bowl and cover with some cling wrap. Now leave in the fridge for 2 hours or until the dough has risen. Lightly sprinkle some all-purpose flour on the work surface and place the dough. Punch in the dough and divide the dough into two portions. Now roll the dough into 10 cm logs and place in a lightly greased baking tray. Leave to rest for 30 minutes. Now spray or brush the baguette’s with water and place in the oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 240°C or 440°F, checking randomly, and enjoy!

Bake in the oven for ten minutes with a pan of boiled water resting on the bottom rack. Remove the water and bake until golden brown.

Tips for baking the perfect baguette!

Achieving a bakery-worthy baguette at home is all about the details. Follow these tips to ensure your bread turns out with a perfectly crisp crust and a light and airy interior.

Choose the right flour.

The type of flour you use plays a crucial role in the texture and flavor of your baguette. Opt for bread flour or a high-protein all-purpose flour to create the signature chewy texture and golden crust.

Pro tip: Make clean, shallow cuts at an angle to encourage an even rise and give your baguette that classic artisan look.

By paying attention to these small but significant details, you’ll transform your homemade baguettes from simple loaves to showstopping creations worthy of any bakery!

  • Make sure your yeast is fresh. This common mistake happens to the best of us. Over time, active yeast deactivates and loses its ability to make your bread rise and fluff. Always check the label to make sure it’s not expired!
  • Don’t skip the steam bath. The steam bath is crucial to making the outside of your bread crusty. It’s well worth the extra step!

Serving baguette!

I probably don’t have to tell you too much about how to enjoy baguette, but here are some of my favorite ways to serve it. Baguettes are incredibly versatile, making them the perfect addition to any meal or occasion. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh out of the oven or repurposing day-old bread, here are some fantastic ways to serve and savor baguettes:

1. Simple and Classic

  • With butter or jam: Slice a warm baguette and serve it with high-quality butter, jam, or honey for a timeless treat.
  • Dipped in olive oil: Pair with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar for a light and flavorful starter.

2. As Part of a Meal

  • For sandwiches: Slice the baguette lengthwise and fill it with meats, cheeses, or roasted veggies for a rustic sandwich.

3. Sweet Ideas

  • French toast: Day-old baguettes make excellent French toast. Dip slices in a sweet egg mixture and pan-fry to golden perfection.
  • Bread pudding: Cube stale baguettes and use them to create a comforting bread pudding.

No matter how you choose to serve it, baguette’s crisp crust and chewy interior make it an essential component of countless meals and culinary creations!

Wise Words!

As a mom, it’s all about balancing convenience with love in every meal you pack for your kids. Homemade baguettes are a great way to show your kids that you care while keeping things simple. You can fill them with their favorite ingredients—be it a classic ham and cheese or a veggie delight—and even sneak in some extra nutrition with wholesome spreads. Remember, it’s not just about the food but the little moments you create around it. So, next time you’re packing lunch, throw in a warm, homemade baguette and watch their faces light up!

You will definitely enjoy it. If mishaps happen, you will get it right.
