What exactly is a fritter?
Let’s start by defining what a fritter actually is. You might be more accustomed to the sweet version, often filled with fruit and drizzled with a sugary glaze. But let me tell you, savoury fritters are just as, if not more, satisfying! A fritter is essentially a deep-fried treat made from a mixture of ingredients, often vegetables, meat, or seafood, combined with a binding batter or dough. The result is a crispy, golden exterior that gives way to a deliciously flavorful interior. Savory fries can be served as snacks, appetizers, or even a main dish, offering a perfect balance of crunch and tenderness in every bite.
Ingredients
5 medium fillets. Finely slice fillets into small cubes. Rinse and place in a colander.
- Chicken: Skinless and boneless breasts cut up as small as you can.
- Eggs: This is the binder for our fritters and is essential in ensuring they don’t fall apart while cooking.
- Flour: All-purpose flour; it’s a must in any fried or frittered dish.
- Cheese: shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Herbs: freshly chopped fresh cilantro.
- Creamy Mayonnaise: We want a bit of tang and moisture to our little fritters.
- Garlic: Just some garlic powder today; I wouldn’t use fresh as it’ll burn in that hot oil.
- Seasoning: salt and pepper.
- Oil: We’re just using olive oil today to fry our fritters.
How to make cheesy chicken fritters!
- Prep the chicken: Use a sharp knife to dice up the chicken into 1/4-inch pieces, or as small as you can. Set aside.
- Form the fritters: In a medium bowl, combine the eggs, flour, grated cheese, mayonnaise, chopped cilantro, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined. Add the chicken and mix really well.
- Cook the fritters: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat and shallow fry. Using an ice cream scoop or large spoon, scoop the chicken mixture and transfer it to the skillet. Slightly flatten it so that it resembles a fritter. Don’t overcrowd the pan.
- Finish the fritters: Cook on the first side for 3 to 4 minutes, flip and cook on the other side for another 3 minutes or until golden brown and fully cooked through. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and repeat with remaining oil and fritters.
- Serve: Serve with ranch dip or a sour cream dill dip.
How to serve chicken patties!
Serving chicken patties is all about creating a meal that’s as delicious as it is satisfying. Here are some ideas on how to serve them:
- Classic Burger Style: Place your chicken patties in soft buns with a variety of toppings like lettuce, tomato, cheese, and your favorite sauces. Add a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
- With Dipping Sauces: Chicken patties are perfect for dipping! Serve them alongside a variety of sauces, such as ketchup, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, or a tangy mustard dip. You could also try a creamy ranch or a spicy Sriracha mayo for extra flavor.
- On a Bed of Greens: For a lighter option, serve your chicken patties on a bed of fresh greens like spinach or mixed lettuce. Add some avocado, cucumber, or a light vinaigrette dressing to complement the flavors.
- With Rice or Mashed Potatoes: For a heartier meal, pair your chicken patties with a side of fluffy rice, creamy mashed potatoes, or roasted vegetables. This makes for a comforting and filling dish.
- As Part of a Wrap or Roll: For something different, you can wrap your chicken patties in a soft flatbread or tortilla, adding some fresh veggies, herbs, and your favorite sauces to create a delicious wrap.
- In a Sandwich: Skip the buns and use slices of crusty bread or a soft roll for a chicken patty sandwich, adding pickles, coleslaw, or a fried egg for extra layers of flavor.
No matter how you choose to serve them, chicken patties make a versatile and mouthwatering dish that everyone will love!
Honestly, these chicken patties disappear just as soon as they are out of the pan, but you could serve them as appetizers, between sliders as mini chicken sandwiches, or as a side for dinner. These are a crowd-pleasing treat, and seriously, try them with that garlic roll, which is all kinds of yum!
